Step One
Posted on: 02/15/2007

Step one is perhaps the most difficult steps of all.  Admitting that we are "powerless" over something is not easy to do.  Yet, in order to begin recovery we must admit and understand the meaning of the word "powerless"

For me, having admitted that I am "powerless over" my addition has made me a better person.  Not only did such step brought me into recovery, but it also helped me understand the difference between "powerlessness"  and "weakness" (despite the same meaning under Webster Dictionary). Being "powerless" over my addition does not mean being "weak" in any other area of my personal life.  If anything, being conscious of the differences in definition helps me become who I am today.

Today, I am no longer a slave of my drug addiction; today I do not have to worry about what I may have done yesterday while I was high, drunk and looking stupid; today, I no longer have to look over my shoulder; today, I do not have to worry about not having enough money for my next high.

When I undertook my first step I started my road to recovery.  Today, I have one of several gift that recovery gave me; that being, serenity.  Today, I am no longer behind my own personal maximum security prison.

My spiritual freedom came when I fully embrace my NA and AA Programs.  Today I have my life back and I thank the NA and AA Programs for providing me with the set of tools that I needed to free my soul from the darkness of addiction. Everything started with Step One.
